Informal settlements in Lima
Currently 75.83% of the more than 27 million inhabitants of Peru live in cities. Percentage in Lima reaches 99% on urban population above rural areas; while in the department of Lambayeque figures reach 79.4% against 20.6% 1. 50 years ago, approximately, migration of people from rural to urban areas has being taking place in alarming numbers in most cities from the Global South. Our cities are not prepared for this amount of population, thus human settlements are generated. About one- third of the urban population worldwide live in slums.
One can read and hear news about slums, precarious constructions, mostly on illegally occupied land, commonly located on high-risk areas on the outskirts of the city; however, we do not usually prioritise those parts of the city.
Here are a few snapshots of human settlements across Lima trough the eyes of an outsider, because it is very different to look at it, and quite another to live it. I’m hoping soon this pictures will be taken walking through these places, instead of ‘from the window of a car’.

Asentamientos humanos en Lima
Actualmente el 75.83% de los más de 27 millones de personas que viven en el Perú lo hacen en ciudades. En Lima, el porcentaje alcanza el 99% de población urbana contra el muy insignificante 1% restante en zonas rurales; mientras que en el departamento de Lambayeque las cifras alcanzan un porcentaje de 79.4% contra 20.6% 1. Esta migración de personas a la ciudad se viene dando en cifras alarmantes en la mayoría de ciudades peruanas y de Latinoamérica en los últimos 50 años. Al no estar preparadas nuestras ciudades para tal cantidad de población se generan los asentamientos humanos. Aproximadamente un tercio de la población mundial vive en barriadas.
Usualmente se lee y se escucha hablar sobre barriadas, construcciones precarias sobre todo en terrenos ocupados de forma ilegal, ubicados –comúnmente– en la periferia de la ciudad, en zonas de alto riesgo; sin embargo, no muy seguido vemos –o queremos ver– esta realidad. Digo ‘ver’, porque es muy diferente mirar desde fuera, con ojos de transeúnte; y otra muy diferente, vivirlo.
A lo largo de este publicación se muestran algunas instantáneas de asentamientos humanos, esperando sinceramente que muy pronto puedan ser tomadas caminando por estos lugares, en vez de ‘desde la ventana de un auto’.

I saw establishments like these on the way from Lima to Pachacamac – it wasn’t until I asked Peruvians what they were that I realized they were slums with minimal electricity and who knows what’s up with the sanitation or clean water situation (or lack thereof).

Yes, Georgina. There are a lot of informal settlements scatter through Lima; some of them are located next to rich neighbourhoods, there you can really see the social-economical gap.
